CANDIDATE: Craig B. Allen

Craig Allen, a career member of the Foreign Commercial Service (FCS), Department of Commerce (DOC), class of Minister Counselor, currently serves as Deputy Assistant Secretary for China at DOC. He is known as a talented FCS leader with significant service in the East Asia region. His specialty in trade, economic policy, and the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), coupled with experience working on military issues as well as public diplomacy, will serve to enhance his ability to successfully serve as Chief of Mission in Brunei.

Previously, Mr. Allen served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia, U.S. Department of Commerce (2010-2013), Senior Commercial Officer, U.S. Consulate Johannesburg, South Africa (2006-2010), Senior Commercial Officer, U.S. Embassy Beijing, China (2003-2006), Commercial Advisor, National Center for APEC, Seattle, Washington (2000-2002), Deputy Senior Commercial Officer and Commercial Officer, U.S. Embassy Tokyo, Japan (1995-2000), Commercial Officer, U.S. Embassy Beijing, China (1992-1995), Commercial Officer, American Institute in Taiwan, Taipei (1988-1992), China Desk Officer, U.S. Department of Commerce (1987-1988), Presidential Management Intern, Department of Commerce (1985-1987) and Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, Washington, D.C. (1985). He also taught English in Japan and Taiwan (1979-1983). As an official of the Department of Commerce, Mr. Allen serves as a Trustee for the Trust Fund for Marshall Islands (2011-Present) and as a Trustee for the Trust Fund for Micronesia (2011-Present).

Mr. Allen earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1979 and a M.S. (Foreign Service) from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. in 1985. He received the Presidential Meritorious Service Award in 2008. His languages include fluent Chinese and Japanese.
