On October 6, 2009, the Inglewood Police Department released information requesting the public’s help in locating a Belizean national identified as Michael Sutherland, AKA Richard Arnold Broyles, wanted in connection with the molestation of a minor (see attached flyer). Having prior knowledge that Sutherland was possibly attempting to flee the country, Inglewood Detectives sought out the assistance of officials from the U.S. State Department and U.S. Marshals Service.
On October 14th, U.S. State Department officials informed Inglewood Detectives that law enforcement officers of the Belize Police Department located and detained Sutherland in Belize City. The State Department further advised that Sutherland informed Belizean officials that he wished to voluntarily return to the United States, thus clearing the way for him to be transported immediately back to the United States. Sutherland is expected to be returned to the United States sometime later today, after which arrangements will be made to have him transported and booked at the Inglewood Police Jail.
Sutherland is being held in custody pursuant to a $1 million (bail) arrest warrant resulting from felony charges filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Sutherland will be arraigned at the Los Angeles Superior Court in Torrance.
“Diplomatic Security’s regional security office in Belmopan maintains an excellent working relationship with the Belize Police Department. It is that relationship, along with the assistance of the Inglewood Police Department that enabled Michael Sutherland’s capture,” said Rob Kelty, Regional Security Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Belize. “It’s this type of close, worldwide law enforcement liaison capability that gives Diplomatic Security unparalleled ability to locate, pursue and apprehend fugitives.”
The Inglewood Police Department wishes to thank the public and the news media for their assistance in this case. Extensive news coverage about Sutherland resulted in numerous “tips” from the public, including valuable information from the Belizean community in Los Angeles, which ultimately led to the swift apprehension of Sutherland. The Police Department also expresses its deepest gratitude to the Belize Police Department, U.S. State Department and the U.S. Marshals Service for their invaluable assistance in coordinating the capture, detention and transportation of this wanted felon to Inglewood Police custody.City of Inglewood, California
