Robert A. Eckert
Assistant Director Threat Investigations and Analysis Directorate

Robert A. Eckert is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister Counselor, and the Assistant Director for Diplomatic Security’s Threat Investigations and Analysis Directorate (TIA).

Prior to becoming the Assistant Director for TIA, Mr. Eckert served as the Deputy Assistant Director for Diplomatic Security’s International Programs (IP) Directorate, and as the Regional Director for IP’s Western Hemisphere Affairs. Mr. Eckert’s overseas assignments include: Regional Security Officer for the U.S. Embassy, Beijing, China; Regional Security Officer to the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand; Deputy Regional Security Officer to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia; the Regional Security Officer to the American Institute in Taiwan; and Assistant Regional Security Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey.

Mr. Eckert‘s domestic assignments included two tours at Diplomatic Security’s Washington Field Office, one as the Criminal Investigations Section Chief. Mr. Eckert also served with DS’ Antiterrorism Assistant Program as a Desk Officer for the Middle East and Europe.

Mr. Eckert joined the Department of State as a Special Agent in 1986. Prior to serving with the Department, he served as a police officer in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he attained the rank of Captain. Mr. Eckert’s police assignments included both patrol and criminal investigations. He joined the United States Air Force in 1967, retiring from the Air Force Reserves in 1991. Mr. Eckert’s Air Force service included assignments as an aircrew member and as a Special Agent with the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

Mr. Eckert has an Associate Degree in Police Administration, and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from The College of New Jersey. He also attended Graduate School at Villanova University, studying Human Organizational Science. Mr. Eckert is a graduate of the Philadelphia Police Academy, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center – Criminal Investigators Course, the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations Academy, and Penn State’s Police Executive Development Program (POLEX).
