Blackwater Employee Killed During Attack on Motorcade

Statement to employees of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security

The Bureau of Diplomatic Security sustained an additional loss yesterday in Iraq. In addition to the helicopter crash, which killed six Blackwater employees working with Diplomatic Security, another Blackwater employee was killed when the motorcade for a protective detail he was serving in was attacked en route to Ramadi, Iraq.

In one day, we lost seven men. These dedicated men served the Department of State with distinction supporting our mission in Iraq, protecting our diplomats. These brave men gave their lives so that Iraqis may someday enjoy the freedom and democracy we enjoy here in America.

I have sent condolences to Blackwater and to the families on behalf of the bureau. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
