ADVOCATING FOR YOUR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILD: SPECIAL EDUCATION OVERSEAS WORKSHOP

9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

This one-day workshop is offered at the George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center, Foreign Service Institute, Arlington, VA. Parents will learn how to proactively navigate the Department's overseas education support system to create the best action plan for their children with special education needs. The workshop will present a comprehensive picture of the Department's special education support system and will provide attendees and opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with presenters. All attendees will receive extensive resource materials for future reference and support. This free workshop is open to all personnel, family members and members of household from all Foreign Affairs agencies. This training is specifically designed for parents of children with special education needs who currently are or who plan to be assigned to a U.S. mission abroad. LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDERS IN THE FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

June 10, 2009

6:00 to 8:30 pm

During the workshop, attendees will discuss the challenges specific to LGBT employees and their partners/family
members. A panel discussion will take place with expert representatives from State offices such as MED, HR, FLO,
and DS. After the panel discussion, attendees will participate in a Q & A session with the panel. Also, there will
be interactive breakout sessions for discussion of topics such as: visas, health, employment, and special
challenges for singles.

An introduction to the world of diplomacy for children (grades 2-12) of USG employees working abroad . Participants learn how an embassy and consulate are organized, learn how to explain American culture, holidays and values to their peers, and identify and practice basic social skills (introductions, appropriate forms of address, and cultural differences in gestures, body language and dress).
