Study Abroad Administrators Security Overseas Seminar (SAA SOS)
In this two-day seminar, study abroad administrators, faculty and staff will identify security threats associated with study abroad programs and develop effective strategies to overcome them.
Department of State subject matter experts will instruct participants regarding personal security issues including current crime trends and how to reduce risks. Presenters will include officials from the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), a division of the Diplomatic Security office, and the Consular Affairs Bureau, a division that assists victims of crime overseas. These experts will share security guidance and information on topics such as: risk assessment in a foreign context; sexual assault awareness; and the interpersonal side of crisis communication and management. Participants will have the unique opportunity to meet face-to-face with the professionals who provide routine and emergency services overseas. This course will not only help improve existing security measures, it will also help administrators create new, effective action plans for the future. For more information, see details.

This training is specifically designed for college and university study abroad administrators, faculty and staff who want to provide a strong, comprehensive security and safety net for their students studying overseas. Any institution, large or small, that prepares and supports students from international study abroad programs, will benefit from this training. All administrators, faculty, or staff interested in networking with academic colleagues and subject matter experts in the field of overseas security should attend.

Private Security Overseas Seminar (PSOS)
The Private Security Overseas Seminar (PSOS) is an opportunity for the private sector to access U.S. Government expertise and information. Three times a year the Transition Center in conjunction with the Overseas Security Advisory Council offers companies, organizations, universities, and nongovernmental agencies a two-day seminar that mirrors the security training now required for all foreign affairs personnel. This mirroring provides valuable guidance for personal choices and serves as a benchmark for the private sector on security training.

Security Overseas Seminar (SOS) (MQ 911)
This two-day program is designed to meet the security awareness needs of U.S. Government personnel and families going overseas. Security experts offer guidance on a range of security-related topics, including personal security, environmental hazards, bombs, fire safety, evacuation planning, crisis management, surveillance, crisis management, foreign intelligence, and hostage survival. (9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day)

Who should attend? Mandatory for all State and non-State foreign affairs agency personnel prior to their first overseas assignment; highly recommended for Adult Eligible Family Members (AEFMs) and Members of Household (MOHs).
State tuition rate: No charge
Non-State tuition rate: $425 (When a non-State employee enrolls in one of the SOS courses, his/her family members, both adult and youth, may take an SOS course for an additional $20.)
NOTE: This course and the online course, Working in an Embassy (PN113), when taken together form the Serving Abroad for Families and Employees (SAFE) program. These two courses fulfill the training requirement that all non-State foreign affairs agency personnel must meet before going overseas to work in an embassy. See registration instructions below to register for the SAFE program and to fulfill this training requirement.
SOS & ASOS are adult sessions and are not designed for children. Parents must make their own arrangements for child care.

Advanced Security Overseas Seminar (ASOS) (MQ 912)
This one-day course is mandatory training for all foreign affairs personnel serving under Chief of Mission authority who have not had security awareness training during the past five years or more. This course ensures personnel are in compliance with 13 FAM 621.1 "Mandatory Security Awareness Training" and STATE CABLE 066580 (March 25, 2004) "Mandatory Personal Security Training" requirements.
This seminar is designed to meet the security awareness needs of U.S. Government personnel and families going overseas. Security experts offer guidance on a range of security-related topics, including personal security overview, weapons of mass destruction, rape awareness, counterintelligence, hostage survival, fire safety, managing in a crisis.
This course is offered in a classroom setting and also online. Note: tuition rates differ for the classroom and online version. For more information, see details.

Who Should Attend? This one-day course is mandatory training for all foreign affairs personnel serving under Chief of Mission authority who have not had security awareness training during the past five years or more. This course ensures personnel are in compliance with 13 FAM 621.1 "Mandatory Security Awareness Training" and STATE CABLE 066580 (March 25, 2004) "Mandatory Personal Security Training" requirements. These requirements also apply to all personnel (including U.S. Government third-party contractors) requesting country clearance from a Chief of Mission to perform temporary duty at an overseas location for a period of 30 days or longer.
Adult Eligible Family Members (AEFMs) and Members of Household (MOHs) from all foreign affairs agencies accompanying employees to post are strongly encouraged to take ASOS (MQ 912).
Prerequisite: The prerequisite for taking ASOS (MQ 912) in the classroom or online for all students is prior completion of the two-day Security Overseas Seminar (SOS) (MQ 911), offered via classroom at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center in Arlington, VA.

Serving Abroad for Families and Employees (S.A.F.E.)
The S.A.F.E. program provides guidance on security practices and on working successfully in a diplomatic environment overseas. S.A.F.E. combines the on- sight two-day Security Overseas Seminar (MQ911) and the online Working in an Embassy (PN113) course. These two courses fulfill the training requirement that all non-State foreign affairs agency personnel must meet before going overseas.
Working in an Embassy is an online course that introduces employees of U.S. government agencies and their eligible family members to the structure and function of United States embassies and consulates overseas. It is designed to assist them in working in a diplomatic environment. Course segments are designed to make participants more productive and effective members of the embassy team by helping them to prepare for their first overseas assignment.
Non-State tuition rate for Working in an Embassy (PN113): $100. Agencies wishing to enroll their personnel in the Working in an Embassy (PN113) course, should submit a funded SF-182 to FSI’s Registrar. Youth Security Overseas Seminar (YSOS) (MQ914)
YSOS is for students in grades two through twelve of USG employees assigned abroad. This one-day class explores safety and security threats that may be faced in an overseas environment and identifies resources that may be used for protection. Students who attend YSOS may also be interested in Young Diplomats Day, which is often offered the day before YSOS.
A parent must be on campus while the child attends.
