Family Member Employment

Transition Center, Foreign Service Institute
Washington, DC

The Family Liaison Office provides the primary point of contact on family member employment. The FLO website includes a very useful employment page containing information about different kinds of overseas jobs, bilateral work agreements and de facto work arrangements, resource links, advice on networking and resume writing, and updated information on job initiatives around the world.

On the State Department intranet, FLO provides Family Member Employment Reports, post-by-post listings of jobs held by family members (http://hrweb.hr.state.gov/flo). Eligible Family Members ("official" family members of U.S. Government employees assigned to embassies or consulates overseas) may request these reports by e-mail.

For those in the DC area, the Transition Center's Training Division offers a number of courses related to employment skills and options:

  • Post Options for Employment and Training Overseas (MQ 703)
  • English Teaching Seminar: An Employment Option (MQ 107)
  • Making Presentations from Design to Delivery (MQ 111)
