Find out host country attitudes towards pets and consider living conditions. Posts providing housing primarily in apartments might discourage larger pets, for instance. Research pet entry requirements, which vary tremendously.
Non-U.S. Government employees should check our online list of pet travel resources.
For U.S. Government employees and family members only, OBC offers a "Pet Chart," with abbreviated entry and quarantine information for many countries, primarily for cats and dogs. This is available on the Department of State intranet or by e-mail request. If you have a pet other than a cat or dog, you will need to do additional research.
