The Foreign Affairs Network is a Department of State program created to provide IT shared services on a common network platform. Department of State’s network will provide access to State-specific Web pages, email, and other resources. It also allows for access to the world-wide web. The FAN is being offered as a shared service to U.S. agencies operating overseas under Chief of Mission Authority, as a direct response to the growing need for a more secure, coordinated, and cost-efficient overseas IT infrastructure. The FAN will provide a consolidated network platform and related services to the foreign affairs community. This offers federal agencies an alternative to operating and maintaining their own, often redundant, network platforms.
To date, the Department has been successful in providing network services and user support to the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), and transforming network services at select locations where DOS and USAID have a presence. Due to the increased attention the US Government has placed on identifying efficiencies and the direction of more efficiently engaging in cross-agency collaboration, the FAN serves as a cornerstone to achieve these objectives.
