The Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) directs the worldwide overseas building program for the Department of State and the U.S. Government community serving abroad under the authority of the chiefs of mission. In concert with other State Department bureaus, foreign affairs agencies, and Congress, OBO sets worldwide priorities for the design, construction, acquisition, maintenance, use, and sale of real properties and the use of sales proceeds.

OBO’s mission is to provide safe, secure, and functional facilities for the conduct of U.S. diplomacy and the promotion of U.S. interests worldwide.

Since 2001, OBO has opened 68 new facilities and has 29 under design and construction. In addition to constructing new facilities, OBO is focused on maintaining new and legacy buildings through its legacy maintenance and investment protection initiatives.

U.S. government unveils new London embassy plan
Plans for moving the London embassy from its current location in Grovesnor Square, central London to the banks of the Thames in Battersea, south London garnered a 91% approval rate from respondents who said the embassy would contribute positively to the regeneration of the surrounding area.
