In 2012, the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia became the Department of State’s fifth U.S. Diplomatic mission abroad to generate emissions-free power from photovoltaic panels. The Embassy has a 180 kilowatt array, which doubles as a shade structure, to provide covered parking for embassy vehicles. The installation is estimated to produce 271,956 kilowatts per year; enough to power 25 average homes.
