The U.S. Department of State (DOS) is currently in the early stages of Master Planning for the long-term development of a Foreign Missions Center (FMC) on the northwest portion of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) site located on 16th Street, NW, near the District’s border with Silver Spring, Maryland. The Department of State proposes to obtain approximately 32 acres of property from the Army and redevelop it as a Foreign Missions Center, whereby parcels would be assigned to foreign governments, under long-term leases, for the construction of new embassy buildings (also known as chanceries). The Department of State is developing the FMC site under the Foreign Missions Act of 1982, which facilitates the conduct of diplomacy and consular operations between the United States and foreign governments.
