Ms. Bohlen joined the Foreign Service in 1977 and had several assignments in the Bureau of European Affairs. She served as U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria (1996-99); Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France (1991-95); and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs (1989-91) with responsibility for European security issues.

Previous assignments include Director of the Office of European Security and Political Affairs (1988-89); Director of the Office of Western European Affairs (1987-88); Executive Director of the United States Delegation to the U.S.-Soviet Nuclear and Space Arms Talks in Geneva, Switzerland (1986-87); Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Paris (1982-85); and Chief of the Strategic Affairs and Arms Control Section in the Office of NATO Affairs (1980-82).

She has also served on the Policy Planning Staff (1985-86) and as Executive Director on the U.S. Delegation for Nuclear and Space Talks in Geneva (1986-87).

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Ms. Bohlen worked for the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (1974-77) and was a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions (MBFR) talks in Vienna.

Ms. Bohlen has a B.A. degree from Radcliffe College (1961) and an M.A. from Columbia University (1965). She received the President's Distinguished Service Award in 1991. She is married to Professor David Calleo.
