U.S. Tanzania Relations

The U.S. established diplomatic relations with Tanzania (then-Tanganyika) in 1961. The U.S. and Tanzania have an established partnership characterized by mutual respect and aspirations for a more peaceful and prosperous future. U.S. Assistance to Tanzania

The U.S., through numerous presidential initiatives and U.S. agencies, has provided development and other assistance to Tanzania for capacity building to address health and education issues, encourage democratic governance, promote broad-based economic growth, and advance regional and domestic security to sustain progress.

Bilateral Economic Relations

Agricultural commodities, minerals, and textiles dominate Tanzania’s exports to the U.S. while imports from the U.S. include wheat, agricultural/transport equipment, chemicals, used clothes, and machinery. Tanzania is eligible for preferential trade benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act.

Integrated Country Strategies

The Integrated Country Strategy is the four-year strategy articulating U.S. priorities in a given country. The Chief of Mission leads the strategy.

Investment Climate Statements

The Investment Climate Statements analyze a variety of economies that are or could be markets for U.S. businesses and provide information on the business climates.

Fiscal Transparency Report

The Fiscal Transparency Report analyzes government transparency and identifies needed changes to improve public spending accountability.

COVID-19 Vaccine Deliveries

ince July, 2021 the United States has donated 6,996,850 safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine doses with the people of Tanzania. This includes 4,112,550 Pfizer doses and 2,884,300 Johnson & Johnson doses. Of the 6,996,850 vaccine doses, 76% were donated in partnership with COVAX and 24% were donated through bilateral agreements.

The United States is committed to leading an international and coordinated effort to accelerate access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines to meet global needs. The United States is working with other governments and partners including COVAX, Caricom, and the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) to protect communities from COVID-19 and apply lessons from this pandemic to enhance health security now and in the future.
