U.S. Global Aids Coordinator Ambassador Tobias Visits PEPFAR Projects in KwaZulu-Natal

Ambassador Randall Tobias, U.S. Global Aids Coordinator, accompanied by U.S. Ambassador Jendayi Frazer, USAID representatives and Durban consulate staff, visited several U.S.-funded projects in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) during his December 7-9 trip to South Africa.

PAS arranged press coverage for Ambassador Tobias’s visit with U.S. and local media, including the Boston Globe. Influential KZN daily “The Mercury” of December 9 published a favorable article on Ambassador Tobias’ visit accompanied by a marvelous photograph of him giving sweets to large gathering of orphans at NOAH (Nurturing Orphans of Aids for Humanity). Also on December 9, PAS organized a press conference for both Ambassador Tobias and Ambassador Frazer, which was heavily attended by major South African media including the Mail & Guardian and SABC TV.

During his brief South African sojourn, spent entirely in KZN, Ambassador Tobias visited some of the pioneering HIV/ Aids work being supported by PEPFAR in rural areas. He toured seven project sites representing a variety of approaches and sectors including among others, CAPRISA in Vulindlela - “Women and Aids Research Center”, conducting trials on microbicides and McCord Hospital – Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of AIDS and an ARV Treatment program for children, funded in cooperation with the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric Aids Foundation.
