Launch of the Angolan Fulbright Association

Carol J. Thompson, Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs
U.S. Embassy
Luanda, Angola
January 30, 2007

Good afternoon and thank you Ambassador Efird for your warm welcome.

It is truly an honor for me to be here and take part in the launch of the Angolan Fulbright Association.

The formation of the association is the result of months of hard work, persistence, and dedication by Teresa Pascoal, Gabriela Cohen, Fernandes Wanda and other members of the leadership. Please let us give them a show off hand for a job well done!

I am confident that under this capable leadership and the active participation of all members, your association is poised to make significant contribution to the development of your beautiful county.

I am also happy to see two American Fulbrighters, Drs. William Rougle and Robert Riviello, who have joined this distinguish panel to share their experiences. Such interactions are in tune with the true spirit of the Fulbright program of sharing experiences, knowledge and skills and in the process nurture and deepen each other's understanding.

The Fulbright program is very young in Angola and as a result has very few alumni but this figure is sure to grow as an increasing number of Angolans return after studying in the U.S., which will further strengthen your association.

Your willingness to use your considerable talent, energy, and dedication to promote higher education and help address many social issues is a concrete testimony of your positive vision for the development of your country.

The United States stands with you to help you achieve these worthy and noble objectives.

I wish you all the best and once again congratulations on reaching this important milestone!
