Comments to Reporters Upon Departure From Hotel Okura

Christopher Hill, Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs
Hotel Okura
Tokyo, Japan
January 20, 2007

QUESTION: [inaudible] Six-Party Talks if it were to start again?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE HILL: I'm hopeful that the next round will make some progress. I frankly felt that we should have made more progress in December, so I'm hopeful that we can do that at the next round.

QUESTION: [inaudible]

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: I can't tell you specifically, but this is part of our consultations between the rounds, so I'm hopeful that we can get something done.

QUESTION: About the sanctions – it's not that easy to lift the sanctions or alleviate it, I think. So, I just kind of thought ...

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: Nothing’s easy in this whole process. Nothing at all is easy. But I don't want to get into specific issues except that, you know, what we want to do is get denuclearization, and that is the most important task, and we're working on that.

OK, thank you very much.
