Remarks Outside Hotel in Tokyo, Japan

Christopher R. Hill, Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs
Okura Hotel
Tokyo, Japan
January 7, 2008

QUESTION: [Inaudible]

ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE HILL: Oh, you know their idea of a full declaration is not our idea of a full declaration, and the problem we have is that we didn't consider the ideas they had for a declaration to be complete or correct. So our concern is, when they present a declaration that it be complete and correct -- because they are required to do so according to the October 3rd agreement.

So I look forward to talking to Director-General Sasae and comparing notes about what has happened the last few weeks. I’ll do the same in Seoul and in Beijing and Moscow, and especially in Beijing I look forward to meeting with Wu Dawei – because, ultimately, a complete and correct declaration needs to be given to the Chinese.

So look, I think there's no question we've hit a bump in the road with this, but we're looking forward to trying to continue to make progress. We feel we made a lot of progress in ’07, and we have an ambitious agenda for ’08. This is not the first time we’ve fallen behind on some deadlines. So let's see how it goes.

QUESTION: Are you going to meet Mr. Kim on this trip?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: No, I have no plans to meet him. We might have someone go to the DPRK at a later date, but for right now I don't have a plan to meet him. I will be going only to Seoul and then to Beijing and on to Moscow.

QUESTION: [Inaudible] in the Six-Party Talks with Japan?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: I don’t know. I'll ask Wu Dawei and let you know.

QUESTION: What are you going to do before you are going to meet Mr. Sasae?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: I think I meet him in about a couple of hours, and right now I’ve got to make a lot of phone calls and things like that.

Ok? See you later.
