DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY ZUMWALT: The United States has very strong security and diplomatic ties with Korea and with Japan, and we very much would like to work to continue to enhance our security partnerships in order to maintain peace and stability in North East Asia. Also with both Japan and Korea, we have a global partnership and we work together very closely not only in North East Asia but around the world.

One example of that is we are working very closely with the coalition of partners, including Korea and Japan, in trying to help the Syrian opposition. And we have been very pleased with the support we are getting from both Japan and Korea in trying to work to alleviate some of the humanitarian sufferings that’s occurring right now in Syria. Another example is the United Nations where Korea is a partner on the UN Security Council these next two years and we very much look forward to working together closely with our friends, the Republic of Korea, on the UN Security Council.

Another example is with both Japan and Korea we work together very closely in Africa -- all three of us have a desire to support sustainable economic development in Africa and I’m very excited to learn about partnerships that the United States, Japan and Korea have in providing economic assistance trying to spur sustainable growth in Africa.
