Deputy Secretary Burns participated in meetings in Moscow, January 16-17, with Foreign Minister Lavrov, his Steering Group co-Chair Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov as well as officials from the Kremlin, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Foreign Ministry. Deputy Secretary Burns reviewed the considerable progress in our bilateral relationship over the past three years and discussed how we might continue to expand on this success in 2012 and beyond. Deputy Secretary Burns and First Deputy Premier Shuvalov in Chicago
On October 3, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William J. Burns delivered keynote remarks at the Annual Meeting of the U.S.-Russia Business Council (USRBC) in Chicago. He said that the United States and Russia are on the cusp of a new kind of “Sputnik moment” in which each country can renew its capacities for innovation, bring out the best in its people, participate in the global economy, and cooperate on today’s challenges. Russian First Deputy Premier Igor Shuvalov also spoke, saying that Russia looks forward to a deeper and strengthened relationship with the United States as a true, global partner.
