Flag of Uzbekistan is three equal horizontal bands of blue (top), white, and green separated by red fimbriations with a white crescent moon and 12 white stars in the upper hoist-side quadrant.ASSISTANCE GOALS: United States government (USG) assistance programs aim to improve livelihoods of those engaged in agriculture, fight infectious diseases, combat trafficking in narcotics, persons and weapons of mass destruction, strengthen the role of NGOs and the media, and improve the rule of law and respect for human rights.

AREA DESCRIPTIONS:

Peace and Security (P&S)

  • Trained Uzbek counter-proliferation officials, the first since 2005, and U.S. experts assessed Navoi airport inspection capacity
  • Assessed military English language training program, provided English teaching materials, and sponsored officer orientation visits to key U.S. military facilities
  • Helped reduced the potential for torture by providing lab equipment and technical advice to government forensics lab to bring it into compliance with international standards and hosted an international anti-corruption conference
  • Conducted over 500 trafficking-in-persons awareness seminars, maintained a trafficking hotline, and helped 273 victims of trafficking reintegrate into society

Governing Justly and Democratically (GJD)

  • Hosted regional workshops for Uzbek lawyers to improve legal knowledge, practical legal skills, and understanding of UN human rights protection mechanisms
  • Provided over 3,200 legal consultations for NGOs regarding current legislation and supported NGOs in developing recommendations for revision of existing civil society related laws
  • Provided messaging and constituent outreach training to political party members, held conferences on the role of civil society in democratic societies, and supported study tours to the United States for civil society and parliamentarians
  • Provided small grants to civic organizations, human rights advocates, and alumni of exchange programs to sponsor greater youth involvement in communities, increase the economic potential of persons with disabilities, and other activities

Investing in People (IIP)

  • Reached agreement with the government on work plans for new programs to educate at-risk populations about the risks and prevention of HIV/AIDS and TB, and a new program to improve the quality of healthcare services including maternal/child health through national and local activities and technical assistance

Economic Growth (EG)

  • Over 1,200 agricultural workers were trained in plant pest/disease identification and control, agronomic best practices, orchard pruning-thinning-grafting, cold storage management, drip irrigation, fruit and vegetable drying, and post-harvest techniques
  • Maintained 32 farm demonstration sites in drip irrigation, cold-storage, orchard operations and produced a farmers manual based on recent training/research work

Humanitarian Assistance (HA)

  • Assisted the vulnerable, including refugees fleeing June violence in Kyrgyzstan.

RECENT SUCCESSES:

  • Strengthen the legal framework for addressing TIP and supported the prosecution of those involved in trafficking.
