Kyrgyz Information on Retraction of Decree Banning Public Meetings

Douglas Davidson, Deputy Chief of U.S. Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe
Statement delivered to the OSCE Permanent Council
Vienna, Austria
September 26, 2002

Released by the U.S. Mission to the OSCE

Thank you, Mr. Chair. We thank the representative of Kyrgyzstan for providing this information. As we said in Warsaw at the Human Dimension Implementation Meeting , the freedom of individuals to join with others in pursuing their legal goals is a basic right and a cornerstone of civil society. We are pleased that Kyrgyzstan has withdrawn the proposed ban on public meetings.

Thank you.
