Croatia's Cooperation With the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY)

Stephan M. Minikes, U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe
Statement delivered to the OSCE Permanent Council
Vienna, Austria
October 3, 2002

Released by the U.S. Mission to the OSCE

Thank you, Mr. Chair. The United States joins the European Union in calling for full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). The United States is emphatically committed to international accountability for war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.

We recall the commitment made by all OSCE member states at the Bucharest Ministerial that "all those indicted by the Tribunal must be turned over to ICTY authorities to stand trial."

In this regard, we urge the Government of Croatia to fully and promptly comply with the Tribunal. All indictees must recognize the Tribunal's jurisdiction and face the charges brought against them.

We welcome the constructive statements made by President Mesic regarding Croatia's responsibility to cooperate with the Tribunal in all cases, including the case of General Bobetko.

Croatia has been a model in the region -- and in the world -- because of its cooperation with the Tribunal. We hope that this excellent record of compliance will continue.

Thank you.
