Message from President Bush to the Fourth Global Forum on Fighting Corruption, Brasilia, Brazil

The White House
June 9, 2005

I send greetings to those gathered for the Fourth Global Forum on Fighting Corruption.

Corrupt practices undermine government institutions, impede economic and social development, and cast shadows of lawlessness that erode the public trust. Every country is capable of fighting corruption, and the United States stands by nations who embrace transparency, promote the rule of law, and implement responsible economic policies.

My Administration is committed to working with dedicated partners to employ international anti-corruption measures, including denying safe haven to the corrupt, their corrupters, and their tainted assets. My Administration has provided millions of dollars each year to help governments around the world fight corruption, and the Millennium Challenge Account will provide developmental assistance to countries that fight corruption, rule justly, invest in their people, and encourage economic freedom.

This year's forum, "From Words to Deeds," is an opportunity for participants to explore ways to prevent and combat corruption at all levels and in all of its forms. I appreciate those involved in organizing this important forum and am grateful for all who foster peace and prosperity around the world. Your commitment to rooting out corruption helps advance democracy and freedom, and builds a better future for people around the world.

Laura and I send our best wishes for a successful convention.
