United Nations Associate Expert Program


Overview:

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Organization Affairs sponsors qualified U.S. citizens for participation in the United Nations Associate Expert (AE) program. This program recruits American citizens under a bilateral agreement between the United Nations (UN) and United States government to work for the Secretariat on projects that promote international peace and security and economic and social development. AEs are appointed to the UN for a period of one year, with a possibility of an extension; depending on the AE’s performance and available funding. After completing their AE assignment, many AEs successfully compete for positions in the UN. This fully funded staffing program strengthens the capacity of the United Nations and gives U.S. citizens the experience and skills necessary to become active members of the international community.

*Updated* Eligibility:

  • Education: Advanced university degree in International Relations, Political Affairs or International Law. A combination of relevant academic qualifications and extensive experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of two years experience, preferably in policy, or related research fields.
  • Language: English required, French highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must be able to relocate to New York, NY in early 2013.
