On April 28, 2008, nearly 600 middle and high school students participated in the Fourth Annual Global Classrooms D.C. Model United Nations Conference at State Department headquarters in Washington, D.C. Students prepared across the school year for this event, engaging in simulations, practicing public speaking, and participating in a series of training conferences featuring State Department volunteers sharing topic-specific expertise.
This event allowed students from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia to not only learn about the United Nations but also apply what they learned as they developed conflict resolution skills and role-played as foreign ambassadors. At the conference, these students were also joined by students from Mexico and Ghana, allowing for real interactions with foreign “diplomats” and enabling true cross-cultural interaction.
Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte gave the keynote address and answered questions from the students. In his remarks, Deputy Secretary Negroponte underscored the importance of international cooperation and the rewards of public service, and discussed how to prepare for a career in public service.
As part of the program, high school students represented their assigned countries on UN committees addressing troop safety, human trafficking, freshwater resources, and the illicit trade of light weapons. In their committees, middle school students tackled increasing access to primary education, combating global warming, and ending kidnapping. The State Department looks forward to continued partnership with the United Nation Association’s Global Classrooms D.C. program and to helping students come together to discuss solving the world’s most pressing issues.
