American Physical Society

The American Physical Society was founded on 1899. From the beginning, the mission of the Society was "to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics", and for many years its activities were centered on the organization of physics meetings and the publication of physics journals. In more recent years, APS has been very active in public and governmental affairs, and in the international physics community. In addition, the Society conducts extensive programs in education and public outreach. Its membership, which represents all areas of physics, has now grown to 43,000 with over 20% of its members living outside the U.S.
