Wendy D. White

Wendy D. White has directed the Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) at the National Academy of Sciences since January 1997. BISO examines issues related to the conduct of science and evaluates opportunities for and barriers to international collaboration in scientific research. It goals is to strengthen U.S. participation in international scientific, engineering, and medical organizations. BISO serves as the national committee to the International Council for Science (ICSU), a non-governmental organization founded in 1931 to strengthen international science for the benefit of society.

Her interests include analyzing the ways in which scientists approach and use information and the impact of information and communication technologies on the traditional scientific methods for obtaining, organizing, and archiving the scientific record. Since joining the staff of the National Academy of Sciences in 1979, she has worked and developed scientific networks in more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. She currently serves on the Information Services Advisory Board for Macalester College, on the Board of Trustees for the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications, and on the Board of Trustees for the International Foundation for Science. She has degrees in French and History (Macalester College, 1975); a Master's degree in library science (University of Minnesota, 1979); and a post-graduate certificate in publishing (George Washington University, 1989).
