U.S.-Algeria Relations

The U.S. and Algeria established diplomatic relations in 1962 following Algeria’s independence from France. Algeria severed relations with the U.S. in 1967 in the wake of the Arab-Israeli War, but reestablished relations in 1974.

Bilateral Economic Relations

The U.S. is one of Algeria’s top trading partners, and Algeria is one of the top U.S. trading partners in the Middle East/North African region. Most U.S. direct investment in Algeria has been in the hydrocarbon sector. The two countries have signed a trade and investment framework agreement that provides a platform to address impediments in the economic relationship

The Fiscal Transparency Report analyzes government transparency and identifies needed changes to improve public spending accountability.

COVID-19 Vaccine Deliveries

Since August, 2021 the United States has donated 604,800 safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine doses with the people of Algeria. This includes 604,800 J&J doses. Of the 604,800 vaccine doses, 100% were donated in partnership with COVAX.

The United States is committed to leading an international and coordinated effort to accelerate access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines to meet global needs. The United States is working with other governments and partners including COVAX, Caricom, and the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) to protect communities from COVID-19 and apply lessons from this pandemic to enhance health security now and in the future.
