| | IranUN Security Council Resolution 1803 on Iran's Nuclear Program (4/4)
On March 3, 2008, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution (UNSCR) 1803, with 14 votes in favor and none against (one country, Indonesia, abstained). This is the fifth time the Security Council has acted on the Iran nuclear issue. It is the fourth time the Council has acted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter to impose legally binding sanctions on Iran for the proliferation risks presented by its nuclear program and its failure to suspend its proliferation sensitive nuclear activities. U.S. Maintains Pressure on Iran (3/20)
Over the past eight days, the U.S. Government has undertaken a number of steps to put Tehran on notice that the international community will not allow the Iranian government to misuse the international financial system or global transportation network to further its aspirations to obtain nuclear weapons capability, improve its missile systems, or support international terrorism. Iranian Parliamentary Elections (3/14)
Iran has once again failed to meet international standards on the conduct of democratic elections. The Iranian regime again used ideological grounds to disqualify candidates for parliament, imposed severe restrictions on the ability of journalists and media outlets to cover the elections, limited the ability of candidates to campaign, and refused to allow independent election monitors access to polling stations on election day. Case of Missing American Citizen Robert Levinson (3/6)
American citizen Robert Levinson disappeared in Iran a year ago during a March 8-9, 2007 business trip to Kish Island.
Mr. Levinson’s wife Christine, his son and sister-in-law visited Iran in December in an effort to gather information about his disappearance and press the Iranian government on his case. While the Iranian authorities guaranteed the security of the family during their journey, they provided few details from their investigation.
We once again call upon Tehran to share with the family and diplomats of the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, which looks after U.S. interests in the absence of normal diplomatic relations, details of any and all information the Iranian authorities have uncovered.
If Iran is holding Mr. Levinson, we demand that the Iranian authorities notify us to that effect, grant the Swiss consular access, and release him and reunite him with his family.
Iran Sentences Journalist Parnaz Azima (3/3)
We condemn Iran’s baseless conviction and sentencing in absentia of Radio Farda correspondent Parnaz Azima to one year in prison for “spreading anti-state propaganda.” Iran’s security services prevented Ms. Azima from leaving Iran for almost eight months in 2007. The latest action by Iran, which forces her to "choose" between returning to Iran to serve the sentence or forfeiting the deed to her 95-year-old mother’s home in Tehran, which was used to secure her bail, is a gross miscarriage of justice. Ms. Azima’s sentencing is part of the Iranian regime’s continued crackdown on independent media. An increasing number of Iranian editors, journalists, and bloggers have been harassed, arrested and convicted for exercising their universal right to freedom of expression and assembly, most recently those from the women’s journal Zanaan. We urge the Iranian regime to drop the charges against Ms. Azima and to adhere to its international obligations and commitments by ending its abusive treatment of journalists and respecting freedom of the press. | | |
