Text of a statement issued by the Friends of Lebanon following their phone call today to address the ongoing crisis in Lebanon.

U.S. Condemns Violence in Lebanon 
Secretary Rice (May 9):
"The United States is deeply concerned about the ongoing violence in Lebanon. We condemn the use of force by illegitimate armed groups and call upon all parties to respect the rule of law. Backed by Syria and Iran, Hezbollah and its allies are killing and injuring fellow citizens, undermining the legitimate authority of the Lebanese government and the institutions of the Lebanese state." Assistant Secretary David Welch (Apr. 11):
" ... 63 people were killed, including 11 people who were just there, you know, bystanders, visa applicants. The whole front of the building was destroyed, leveled, and most of the loss of life was the personnel who were working in those offices. This was, I think, around lunchtime, slightly thereafter. And, I mean, literally, the building pancaked on them. It was horrible." [Full Text]

The United States Government’s Contribution to UNRWA’s 2008 General Fund and Emergency Appeal 
The U.S. government pledge to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has reached $148 million for 2008. This amount includes a total of $91 million ($40 million of which was announced in January) to UNRWA’s General Fund supporting Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria; and $57 million to UNRWA’s 2008 West Bank and Gaza emergency appeal.
