Under Secretary of State Karen P. Hughes to Visit Youth Programs in Morocco
Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen P. Hughes is traveling to Morocco August 14-17, 2007. This visit underscores the importance of the Youth Enrichment Programs (YEP) launched this summer in 13 countries and in the West Bank and Gaza. The YEP are breaking new ground, reaching out to a new audience at an even younger age -- 8-to-14-years old -- than those participating in traditional exchange programs. [more]

Western Sahara Initiative
On April 10, Under Secretary Burns met with a senior Moroccan delegation to discuss the Western Sahara issue. He called the initiative Morocco presented "a serious and credible proposal to provide real autonomy for the Western Sahara." The United States hopes Morocco's presentation of its initiative to the United Nations will spur discussion and create an opportunity for Morocco and the Polisario to engage in direct negotiations, without preconditions, to resolve the Western Sahara dispute. The United States welcomes all efforts to find a realistic and workable solution to this longstanding dispute in a manner that brings peace, stability, and economic prosperity to the Maghreb.

U.S. Condemns Terrorist Attacks
The United States condemns the terrorist attacks that occurred yesterday, April 10, in Casablanca involving suicide bombers and today's bomb attacks in Algiers. These horrific acts indiscriminately killed members of the security services and civilians alike. We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims of these atrocities, their families, and the people of Algeria and Morocco. We stand with the Moroccan and Algerian people and their governments in the struggle against extremism and violence, and support their efforts to secure a future of peace. There is no political justification for the murder of innocent lives.
