MEPI Award Spurs Interactive English as Foreign Language Program

Released by the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs
October 25, 2004

The Office of the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) announces an award to Cisco Learning Institute (CLI) of Arizona and its partners to produce and develop an online, interactive English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Program in Jordan. The award represents an ongoing investment by the U.S. in Jordan’s educational system through the Jordan Education Initiative (JEI).

CLI and its partners--Pearson Foundation, Rubicon, Planning and Learning Technologies (Pal-Tech), and Alliant University--will develop and implement a dynamic interactive EFL curriculum with companion training materials for teachers in the Jordanian education system. This online learning program will combine industry-leading EFL curricula and online learning technology and provide the Jordanian Ministry of Education with a scalable, cost-effective, and curriculum driven learning program to a wide number of students, teachers, and schools. The consortium was selected after a rigorous competitive process. The project is slated to begin immediately with a goal of providing a fully functional online, interactive EFL curriculum and instructor support materials for grades 7-12 by the start of the 2005-2006 school year.

The Jordan Education Initiative (JEI) is a public-private partnership model for effective and advanced learning deployment. It serves as a model of effective information and communication technology (ICT)-enabled learning that can be replicated across Jordan, and in other countries in the region. JEI was developed in partnership between the Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the World Economic Forum. JEI stakeholders include over 17 global corporations, 17 Jordanian entities, and 11 governmental and non-governmental organizations. More information about the JEI can be found at: http://www.weforum.org.

MEPI is a Presidential initiative founded to support economic, political, and educational reform efforts in the Middle East and expanded opportunity for all people of the region, especially women and youth. The initiative strives to link, U.S., and global private sector businesses, non-governmental organizations, civil society elements, and governments in the Middle East together to develop innovative policies and programs that support reform in the region. More information about MEPI can be found at: www.MEPI.state.gov.
