Ambassador Roemer: "This is an internal issue for India and one that the U.S. expresses a great regret on the loss of lives and the violence that has taken place over the last several months. When there is bilateral talk between Pakistan and India, it will be at Indian and Pakistan's scope and pace and character. The President also said when he was here that he encourages Dr. Singh and the people of India to engage in these conversations with the government and people of Pakistan. He [President Obama] is unequivocally and fervently in favor of India having a permanent seat in a reformed United Nations. It was one of the many highlights of the President's visit to India to make this historic announcement. We applaud that and now we will be working to see that happens."
