Earthquake in South Asia

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, on October 8, 2005, at 8:50 a.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir, and approximately 60 miles north-northeast of Islamabad.

The U.S. Response

U.S. Naval Ship arrives into Pakistan with relief and reconstruction supplies.

The United States responded immediately and generously to Pakistan's call for assistance following the tragic and devastating earthquake of October 8. Our response has been consistent with our humanitarian values and our deep commitment to Pakistan. The U.S. has pledged a total of $510 million in earthquake relief and reconstruction efforts to assist the people of Pakistan and to support Pakistani government relief efforts. This total includes $300 million in humanitarian relief and reconstruction assistance, $110 million in military support for relief operations, and at least $100 million anticipated from U.S. private contributions. Ambassador Crocker visited the humanitarian efforts in Muzfarrabad, Pakistan, where he observed assistance operations firsthand.
