Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roger Noriega visited Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru on August 1-6, 2004, to express U.S. support for democratic governance in the Andes and to deepen bilateral relations with those governments. He visited with the Presidents of each country, as well as other high-ranking officials, civic groups, representatives of the indigenous communities, and the press. Among the issues discussed during the trip were the ongoing negotiations on a regional free trade agreement with the United States, progress in the war on illegal drugs and terrorism, and enhancing governability in the region.
