Remarks on Dance Motion USA

Ann Stock, Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs
Washington, DC
December 20, 2010

QUESTION: What is the Dance Motion Program?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY STOCK: Dance Motion USA is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the Department of State, and it’s one of the most important programs we have.

QUESTION: Why is the Dance Motion Program Important?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY STOCK: Well, in my mind, it connects dancers from all over the United States. This year it’ll be four companies. And they travel throughout the world and they connect one-on-one with people. They do that through a variety of ways. They do performances, which a lot of people are invited to. They do master classes, they do training, and they do workshops. But I think the key thing here is that they form relationships that last a lifetime. And the other important thing for me is by using dance, we actually connect to youth all over the world.

QUESTION: What Other Elements Will Add Into Dance Motion USA in 2011?

ASSISTANT SECRETARY STOCK: Well, in 2010 we started the program and it’s been so successful. We had three dance companies that traveled to nine different countries. It was so popular with our embassies but also with the people of the other countries that we decided that we would expand the program. And this year we’ll travel to 14 different countries with four – we’re adding one dance company, so we’ll have a total of four dance companies traveling around the world.
