Jonathan Margolis, a career member of the Senior Executive Service, serves as Deputy Coordinator for the Bureau of International Information Programs at the Department of State. IIP is the principal international strategic communications entity for the U.S. foreign affairs community. The Bureau informs and influences foreign audiences by presenting a positive vision rooted in U.S. values, supporting U.S. foreign policy with timely and trusted information, and countering extremist violent ideologies. Dr. Margolis is responsible for overseeing all of the Bureau’s Internet and print products and publications, including its multimedia content and interactivity strategies.
From 2006-2007, Dr. Margolis served as the Senior Coordinator for Global and Functional Issues in the Office of the Foreign Assistance, where he oversaw reform efforts to ensure that U.S. foreign assistance achieves transformational diplomacy objectives.
Prior to joining IIP, Dr. Margolis served as the Department's Special Representative for Sustainable Development and as the Director of the Office of Policy Coordination and Initiatives (PCI) in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs in the Department of State beginning in 1998. As Special Representative, he coordinated U.S. efforts to promote partnerships and policies that advanced economic growth, social development, and environmental stewardship. He headed the U.S. Delegation to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.
Before moving to PCI, Dr. Margolis served as the Division Chief for the Middle East and Asia in the Office of Science and Technology Cooperation. He supervised a team of officers responsible for U.S. bilateral cooperation with Japan, China, India, Israel, Korea, and many others.
Dr. Margolis joined the Department in 1991 and was integrally involved in the multilateral track of the Middle East peace process through 1996, representing the U.S. on economic, environment, and water-related issues, and promoting regional cooperation between Israelis, Palestinians, and Middle East countries as part of the peace process.
Dr. Margolis has a Ph.D. from Harvard University in psychology, focusing on negotiation and conflict resolution. He holds a Master's Degree from the Fletcher School of International Law and Diplomacy. His undergraduate degree is in Fine Arts from Harvard College. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at American University, and at the Foreign Service Institute.
