Martha Campbell has been a career member of the Department of State’s Foreign Service for 29 years. She was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of the Marshall Islands on August 21, 2009. Most recently, Ambassador Campbell served as the Dean of the School of Professional and Area Studies at the Foreign Service Institute, training State Department and interagency employees in support of foreign policy priorities around the world. She previously served as the Executive Director of the Bureaus of European and Eurasian Affairs and International Organizations Affairs. She also served as a Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Management and as a Career Development Officer.
Ambassador Campbell opened the Office of the U.S. Representative in Majuro, Marshall Islands in 1987, after the United States signed the Compact of Free Association. Her other overseas assignments, since she joined the Foreign Service in 1980, have included Management Officer at U.S. Embassies in The Hague, Stockholm, Budapest, Majuro and Paramaribo, Suriname; Consular Officer in Rotterdam; and Chief of the Political/Economic Section on a second tour in Paramaribo.
Ambassador Campbell received her B.A. from Kalamazoo College and her M.A. from the University of Notre Dame.
