Carmen M. Martinez
Ambassador, Zambia
Term of Appointment: 11/28/2005 to present

Carmen M. Martinez was sworn in as Ambassador to the Republic of Zambia on November 28, 2005 and presented her credentials to the President of the Republic of Zambia, Levy Mwanawasa, on December 12, 2005.

A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, she served previously as Chief of Mission in Rangoon, Burma (2002-2005), Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Sao Paulo, Brazil (1999-2002), Deputy Chief of Mission in Maputo, Mozambique (1997-1999), Principal Officer at the U .S. Consulate in Barranquilla, Colombia (1993-1994), Chief of the Consular Section in Quito, Ecuador (1989-1993), and as a Consular Officer in Bangkok, Thailand (1986-1989), and Caracas, Venezuela (1983-1985).

Selected for Senior Training at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. (1994-1995), Ambassador Martinez has also served in the State Department's Bureau of Human Resources (1995-1997). She received a Presidential Award for Meritorious Service in 2003 and was also the recipient of Senior Foreign Service Performance Awards in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 and 2005.

Ambassador Martinez holds an MA degree in Medieval History, an MS degree in National Security and Strategic Resources, and speaks Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai.
