Dr. Gary Penner, a member of the Senior Foreign Service, was appointed Medical Director of Medical Services in October 2011. As the senior medical officer for the Department and medical advisor to the Secretary, he is responsible for promoting the health and well being of the American Diplomatic community.
Dr. Penner joined the State Department in 1989 and served as the Regional Medical Officer at US embassies in Islamabad, Warsaw, Almaty, Bangkok, Baghdad, Vienna, and Kabul and served as Deputy Medical Director. Prior to joining the State Department Dr. Penner served as a Flight Surgeon in the US Navy and was in private practice in rural Nebraska for 11 years.
Dr. Penner received his MD degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He is board certified in Family Medicine.
