Mark R. Stone has assumed the duties of Acting Chief Economist effective August 19, 2013. Mr. Stone joined the State Department as Deputy Chief Economist in August 2012. For the prior 20 years he worked for the International Monetary Fund in the Research, Western Hemisphere, European, Asia and Pacific, and Monetary and Capital Markets Departments. He has considerable applied policy experience with economic crises and countries in transition. His most recent position was Deputy Division Chief of the Monetary and Macroprudential Policy Division where he focused on monetary policy, central banking and systemic financial stability. He has also worked for Data Resources, Inc and for Fleet National Bank.
Mr. Stone holds a Ph.D. and B.Sc. (Honors) from the University of Wisconsin and an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics. He has published numerous working and journal papers primarily in the fields of monetary, international and financial economics.
