Dana Shell Smith is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. She began her current assignment at the U.S. Department of State as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs in May 2011. Previously, she served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, establishing a new division for International Media in June 2010.
Prior to her assignment to Public Affairs, Ms. Shell Smith served as Regional Arabic Language Spokesperson and Media Hub Director in Dubai and as senior advisor to the Director General of the Foreign Service.
From 1992 to 2006, Ms. Shell Smith served in a number of positions specializing in public affairs and public diplomacy, including overseas tours of duty in Taiwan, Amman, Tel Aviv, Gaza, and Cairo.
Ms. Shell Smith speaks Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, and Hebrew. She is a graduate of the University of California at San Diego, having been valedictorian of the first class of Fifth College (now Eleanor Roosevelt College).
