Bathsheba (Sheba) Crocker is the Principal Deputy Director in the Office of Policy Planning. Previously, she served as the Chief of Staff to Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg. Before her return to the Department of State in early 2009, Sheba served as the Senior Policy and Advocacy Officer for International Affairs at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She also held senior positions at the United Nations, where she focused on peace building issues and coordinating the UN’s response to the 2004 Asian tsunami. Ms. Crocker previously co-directed the Post-Conflict Reconstruction Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC. She has also served as an attorney-adviser in the Office of the Legal Adviser at the Department of State and as the executive assistant to the Deputy National Security Advisor at the White House. Sheba received a J.D. from Harvard Law School, a Masters of Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School and a B.A. from Stanford University.
