Carol Z. Perez assumed her duties as Deputy Assistant Secretary on June 6, 2011. Prior to her assignment in INL, Ms. Perez was the Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General Milan. She previously served as the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Secretary in the Executive Secretariat supporting Secretaries Powell and Rice from 2003 to 2009.
Ms. Perez is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor. She began her career with the Department in September 1987, serving in Barcelona, Spain, as Consul General from 2001 to 2003, as well as at the U.S. Embassies in Rome and Madrid. She has also served in a variety of Washington assignments, including as Deputy Executive Secretary under Secretary Albright, Director of the Executive Secretariat Staff office and as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Management.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Ms. Perez received her undergraduate degree from Hiram College in Ohio and her Masters Degree in Health Care Administration from the George Washington University.
