Women leaders from nearly 30 countries met in Geneva, December 8 – 10, at the Courage to Lead: a Global Summit for Women Leaders in Human Rights, organized by Vital Voices and the Eleanor Roosevelt Project with prominent support from both the Department of State and the United Nations office in Geneva. The summit consisted of a day’s focus on each of three central themes critical to a women’s empowerment: access to food and shelter; education, including literacy; and protection from violence, including trafficking. The Deputy UN High Commission for Human Rights gave a keynote address on December 10 (Human Rights Day), and Secretary Clinton accepted the Eleanor Roosevelt Lifetime Achievement Award in Human Rights during an interactive videoconference with the summit participants and members of Geneva’s civil society, media, and diplomatic communities gathered together in the Grand Hall of the United Nations headquarters.
