The Malaysian Ministry of Defense’s Science and Technology Research Institute for Defence (STRIDE), organized this international Biorisk Management Workshop to follow on progress at the Biosafety and Biosecurity Asia conference in 2007 as a forum to bring together global biosafety, biosecurity, and biodefence experts from July 18-20, 2011 to discuss practices, challenges and strategies for the Asia Pacific region. Policy makers, scientists, researchers and industry representatives gathered to discuss recent developments in the Asia Pacific region, to share effective strategies to prevent biocrime and other threats; to identify and address gaps in the region’s biosafety, biosecurity, and biodefence, and to network and exchange the latest scientific findings and experience. The U.S. State Department's Biosecurity Engagement Program (BEP), run out of State ISN/CTR, supports efforts to reduce terrorist access to WMD knowledge, materials and expertise through engagement of biological scientists to promote safe and secure laboratory practices and enhance animal and human infectious disease surveillance in high priority countries and regions. The U.S. State Department's Biosecurity Engagement Program (BEP) sponsored the attendance of approximately 100 Malaysian and regional experts. Remarks by Deputy Assistant Secretary Simon Limage
