Under Secretary María Otero traveled to Laos June 7 to 8 and to Thailand June 9 to 12. In Laos, Under Secretary Otero engaged in bilateral discussions with senior government officials on topics such as unexploded ordnance (UXO), U.S.-Laos bilateral relations, civil society, human rights, sustainable development and regional concerns. Under Secretary Otero is the highest ranking U.S. State Department official to visit Laos in seven years. While in Thailand, Under Secretary Otero met with government officials, representatives of non-governmental and international organizations, human rights activists, and youth to discuss Burmese refugees, trafficking in persons, regional cooperation, human rights issues and youth engagement.
