Secretary Rice Travels to Bulgaria

In Sofia, Secretary Rice received the Stara Planina First Class Medal, Bulgaria’s highest award, for her role in obtaining the release last July of Bulgarian medics and a Palestinian doctor held in Libya.

--07/07/08 Secretary Rice: Travel to Prague, Sofia, and Tbilisi, July 7-10

After a brief meeting at the U.S. Embassy in Sofia in which they thanked Secretary Rice for her efforts in freeing them from more than eight years of detention in a Libyan prison, Secretary Rice poses with Snezhana Dimitrova, while Dr. Ashraf al-Hajuj and Nasya Nenova look on. Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov explains how Secretary Rice made vital contributions toward the release of six Bulgarian medics detained in Libya for more than eight years.  His remarks came after he bestowed Bulgaria’s highest honor, the Order of Stara Planina – First Class, on Secretary Rice and presented her with a medal in a brief ceremony.
