Swati Patel joined the Foreign Service in November 2003 as a Public Diplomacy officer and is currently assigned to the Office of Mexican Affairs in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. She served her first tour at the U.S. Embassy in Honduras as a Consular-Political/Military Officer, and her second tour as a Consul for the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai.
Her current portfolio is law enforcement, homeland security, immigration, and consular issues for U.S. and Mexico bilateral relations as well as Department of Homeland Security liaison for WHA/MEX.
Prior to joining the State Department, Ms. Patel worked as a District Adjudication Officer for the Department of Justice/Immigration and Naturalization Service and continued working in the same capacity with the Department of Homeland Security/Citizenship and Immigration Services. Her first job out of college was with the Social Security Administration.
Ms. Patel has a B.A. in International Relations, with concentrations in Health and the Developing World, and a minor in Political Science from University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is a native speaker of Gujarati and also speaks, at varying levels, Spanish and Hindi.
